A couple weeks ago, readers submitted their favorite classic books to be published in this week's post. I wanted to thank each and every one of the people who submitted for contributing to this list. I couldn't have done it without you.

Before I go on, I wanted to add that, because I received submissions of many classic books from a variety of genres, I decided it would most organized to place each book in one of four sections: Traditional Fiction Classics, Non-fiction Classics, Children's Classics, and Modern Classics.

Some of the distinctions between categories are more blurred than others and can be argued differently; some books overlap into more than one of these categories. These categories aren't meant to define the books; rather, they are meant so that the list can be arranged in a format that is more easily accessible to readers than a rather long list of 50 items.

Now, dear reader, read on. :)

I found it odd that you consider lotr a traditional classic when it came out in 1954 yet 'To Kill A Mockingbird' as a modern classic when it came out int 1960.

Still a good list though.

I appreciate your insightful observation, and I'll definitely look over the post again. There might be some inconsistencies; I haven't read every book on the list, and sometimes research results were conflicting. However, I do have reasons why I put LOTR and To Kill a Mockingbird in the categories I did.

Again, not every book has clear-cut group it belongs to. If a person argued that LOTR belongs in the modern classics category, I wouldn't disagree with them. Time period is a significant factor in differentiating classics from modern classics, but it’s not the only thing that separates them.

While LOTR is a product of the 20th century, its influence on literature, in my opinion, places it in a category that echoes the way earlier works shaped their genres. It set the standard for modern epic fantasy, making it "traditional" in the sense that it has become foundational to its genre.

To Kill a Mockingbird is also a timeless tale, but the reason I put it in the modern classics category is because it speaks directly to social and cultural issues of its era, within the context of the 20th century.

Thanks for the comment, Seton!
