My friend and fellow blogger, Autumn Grace from Shades of Art, recently started a blog challenge called Drifting Leaves. This is an autumn-themed blog tag where bloggers can answer fall-related questions!

This season is passing by so quickly. Believe it or not, we've already had our first snowfall and the temperatures are dropping well below freezing. The trees are nearly bare, and beneath the frost, the ground is covered with a thick blanket of dry and colorless leaves. Because of this, I really hope to capture the essence of autumn in this blog post, before the season slips completely out of my grasp into a dark, cold, and long winter.

Thank you, for the tag, Autumn!

Guidelines:

  1. Download the cover photo and use it for your post

  2. Acknowledge the person who tagged you

  3. Tag others and comment on their blog to let them know!

  4. Slip into autumn vibes

Questions:

  1. If autumn isn't your favorite season, what is? And if autumn is your favorite season, why?

  2. What is your favorite thing that you do each autumn?

  3. What are a couple of your favorite autumn memories?

  4. What book most reminds you of the autumn? Movie?

  5. What is your favorite drink for this season?

  6. What is one new thing that you want to do this autumn?

  7. Do you decorate for the season? If so, how? If not, how come?

  8. Thanksgiving is a couple of months away; what is your favorite way to celebrate? (I think most of my blogger friends are American. 😂) If not, skip this one.

  9. What color most makes you think of autumn?

  10. Type up a list of ten words or names (i.e. White Chicken Chili) that encapsulate the season of autumn for you.

My Answers:

  1. If autumn isn't your favorite season, what is? And if autumn is your favorite season, why?

My answer constantly changes. In December it's winter (because of Christmas and snow); in February it's spring (because the winter has lasted far too long); in June it's summer (because of summer break!); and by October, it's autumn. Right now, autumn is definitely my favorite season. I love the crisp scent of the air, the fallen leaves, the cries of the geese, and the pumpkins.

  1. What is your favorite thing that you do each autumn?

Every autumn, my family visits a nearby farm, and I always have a wonderful time. I love picking out pumpkins from the patch, feeding the young goats, holding the kittens, playing tetherball, getting lost in the cornmaze, and shooting apples from the cannon.

Tied with visiting the farm, I also love visitng the Holy Hill Basilica, which is a beautiful place in my state. We have gone there three times now and I love it. Taking pictures, going on hikes, collecting holy water from the spring, attending Mass, and spending hours in the gift shop are all part of the autumn tradition.

Take a look. Isn't it incredibly beautiful?

  1. What are a couple of your favorite autumn memories?

I have a lot of autumn memories. Most of them are just simple things—carving pumpkins, feeding the geese, apple-picking, decorating the house, going on fall walks with my family, and climbing the trees in my backyard to read there in my favorite nook. I think oftentimes it's the simple things that make life the most beautiful.

  1. What book most reminds you of the autumn? Movie?

The book that reminds me most of autumn is The Children of Húrin, by J. R. R. Tolkien. I've read it several times, and mostly in the fall. It's a heavy and thought-provoking story that evokes the same emotions in me as the season does, when I open the window at night to gaze at the autumn stars, and the chill air stings my face.

"And the leaves fell from the trees in a great wind as they went, for the autumn was passing to a dire winter." —From The Children of Húrin

The Hobbit and LOTR movies always remind me of autumn as well, most likely because I first watched them during this season, and they bring a certain nostalgia with them.

  1. What is your favorite drink for this season?

I love hot chocolate!!

ree

  1. What is one new thing that you want to do this autumn?

I'm working on memorizing Chopin's Nocturne no. 19, and I'm also working on a few duets—Debussy's Petite Suite, and Brahm's Hungarian Dance No.1.

  1. Do you decorate for the season? If so, how? If not, how come?

I usually do decorate, though not lavishly! We usually buy a lot of pumpkins, either to carve, paint, or just put outside as it is. If we chose not to carve it, we would cook and eat them: steamed, baked, made into soup—you name it! It's delicious. And we bake and eat the seeds as well.

We also usually plant chrysanthemums, hang a wreath of fall leaves on our front door, stick on autumn window clings, and sometimes put up fake spider webs. We stopped putting up spider webs because we figured out that real bugs were actually getting stuck in them, though.

  1. Thanksgiving is a couple of months away; what is your favorite way to celebrate? (I think most of my blogger friends are American. 😂) If not, skip this one.

My favorite way to celebrate is just to get together with my immediate family and have a big meal together. I love making recipes, baking pies, cheesecakes, and other desserts, and wolfing down my mom and dad's incredibly delicious cooking. We also sometimes have a thankfulness jar, and for the weeks leading up to the holiday, we put slips of paper with things we are thankful for written on it. On Thanksgiving day, we read all of the pieces.

  1. What color most makes you think of autumn?

The color of marigolds.
