Grasping Summer
Summer brings the memory
Of late night whisperings
Over stories in the dark.
Glowing fireflies,
And stars in the still blue sky,
Millions of them,
Each a dream
From far away. . .
Summer brings the feel
Of sandals pattering
Over burning cement,
Of bike wheels swishing
Through puddles
Of last night’s rain.
A drop of ice cream
On sun soaked sand. . .
And time stands still.
Summer brings the scent
Of swimming pool water
And bug-spray
And sunscreen.
Campfire smoke rising
In a forever sunset
Glazed in golden glory.
Summer stands still
Like a child’s laughter,
Like a dent in time.
Coated in sweet custard,
Like a tree in the sunlight,
And the swell
Of a firework
Before it bursts.
Quiet evenings
In late July.
The crickets’ buzz
Drones on and on.
Days pass like dreams
And dreams pass like years. . .
Summer is fading,
The held breath unfurling,
The sunset darkening,
The mourning dove crying.
And time is moving once more.
The fireflies blink
And falter.
The air brings the scent
Of autumn’s chill,
And the clock hand is ticking again,
Despite my efforts
To grasp it.
Beautiful!
